About the project

Access to healthcare. Teen pregnancy. Smoking.

These are the issues three seventh grade girls from Washington Junior High School in Joliet, Illinois tackled during a three-month Youth Media Workshop spin-off project in 2008. They took their personal interests, researched their topic, and produced a video for others to watch. “I want them to be solution driven,” Pamela Fort, project director in Joilet, told the Times Weekly newspaper. “We get emotional about things but that’s not enough – you have to know how to get solutions.”

In the fall of 2007, Pamela Fort of Joliet, Illinois called Illinois Public Media after finding the Youth Media Workshop website. She wanted to direct a project there. We sent her materials, consulted with her on the phone and visited her in Joliet.

When the students were finished with their work, they took a field trip along with Ms. Fort and one of the students’ grandmothers to Illinois Public Media where they met other Youth Media Workshop graduates who showed them how to use the mixing board and microphones in the radio studios. Outreach producer, Henry Radcliffe, showed the students how to use the remote camera and record field audio.

The Joliet project was written about in area newspapers. Download the PDF articles:
