Dante, a participant from Edison Middle School, interviewed JW Pirtle at his home on March 16, 2010.  Mr. Pirtle served on the Champaign City Council for 22 years.  In 1989, Mr. Pirtle, along with Lonnie Clark and Vernon Barkstall, started radio station, WBCP AM-1580. The station’s call letters are the first initial of each person’s last name. WBCP is the only Black-owned radio station in east central Illinois.  Dante talked to Mr. Pirtle about violence, including the police shooting death of Kiwane Carrington in October, 2009, and about WBCP.
